humanity

/hjuˈmænɪti/, /juˈmænɪti/ noun B1

**Humanity** denotes the entire human race, the aggregate of all people, and it also captures the trait of kindness and compassion toward others. When we speak of humanity, we are either referring to our species in a broad, statistical sense or to the moral fibre that makes us care. The word slides easily between concrete and abstract contexts. In scientific reports you might read about humanity’s impact on climate, while in literature you’ll encounter a plea for more humanity in a cold bureaucratic world. Use it when you want to emphasize either the totality of people or the benevolent side of human nature.

Word Origin From Latin homo 'human being', which comes from the PIE root *dhghem- 'earth' — because humans are earthlings, made from humus (soil). That's why humanity shares a root with humus, exhume (dig out of the earth), and humble (lowly, close to the ground).
