smarting

/ˈsmɑɹtɪŋ/ adj

Painful, sore.

Word Origin Smarting comes from smart, which in Old English smeart meant 'stinging, sharp, painful' — like a smart blow. That's why we say a wound smarts. The word later shifted to mean 'quick-witted, sharp-minded', giving us smartly, smartness, and even smartphone. The original physical sting is still there in smarting pain.
