healing

/ˈhiɫɪŋ/ noun B1 ✓

**Healing** is the body's knack for patching its own holes, the faith‑filled hand that mends what asterisks can't, the mind's way of untangling knots, the verb that lets you say you're taking a break from reality, and the verb that also means to go on holiday.

Heal comes from Proto-Germanic hailjan 'to make whole', from PIE *kailo- 'whole, uninjured'. So to heal is literally 'to make whole again'. The same root gives us whole, health, and even holy (originally 'whole, uninjured, sacred'). Halloween comes from 'All Hallows' Eve', the evening before the holy day. So healing is the process of becoming whole.
