serf
/ˈsɝf/ noun B1**Serf** is a peasant bound to a manor who tills the lord’s soil in return for shelter and a sliver of his own land. He lacks the legal right to wander off without the lord’s consent. In the feudal hierarchy a serf occupied a rung below free tenants, owing labor, a portion of the harvest and occasional taxes while remaining attached to the estate for life. Though not owned like a slave, a serf could not sell his labor or move at will, making the relationship a blend of dependency and duty. The term now pops up in jokes about anyone feeling shackled to a boring job or an overbearing bureaucracy.
