inroad

/ˈɪnˌɹoʊd/ noun

Often followed by in, into, or on: initial progress made toward accomplishing a goal or solving a problem.

Word Origin Inroad is an Old English compound: in 'in' and rād 'riding, road'. So it's literally a 'riding in,' a military incursion or encroachment. Over time, it came to mean any advance that gains ground. The same rād gives us road, ride, and raid (a riding into). The PIE root *reidh- meant to ride. So an inroad is a riding into enemy territory, making progress.
