wist

/ˈwɪst/ verb C1

knew

Word Origin From Old English wist 'knowledge, understanding' — related to wit and wise. The PIE root *weid- 'to see, know' gives us vision, view, and wisdom. Wist is the old noun for what you know, and it's the past tense of wit (I wist = I knew). It's a great example of how seeing leads to knowing.
