role

/ˈɹoʊɫ/ noun A1, B1

**Role** can be the part an actor steps into, the script society hands you, the spot a tool occupies in a machine, the label that bundles duties, knowledge, and perks, or the grammatical job a word plays in a sentence. In each case the word signals a purpose and a set of expectations, turning abstract potential into a concrete contribution.

【核心含义】指个人、事物或词语在特定情境中承担的功能、职责或身份定位。

常与play/take/have搭配(如play a role),注意与"roll(滚动)"发音相同但含义迥异。

Word Origin Role comes from the rolled-up paper that an actor's part was written on — literally a 'roll' from Latin rotulus 'small wheel, scroll'. The same root gives us roll, rotate, and round. So an actor's role is originally a scroll, and the meaning shifted from the physical roll to the character played.
