backlash

/ˈbæˌkɫæʃ/ noun B2

**Backlash** is a swift, angry reaction that follows a decision, policy, or cultural shift. It typically surfaces as protests, criticism, or a sudden withdrawal of support. The force behind the response feels as if the world has tilted and the affected parties are being knocked back. The term works equally well for social arenas and for physics. In a newsroom, a politician’s controversial tweet can trigger a backlash that floods comment sections with indignation. In engineering, the recoil of a gun or the snap of a spring is called a backlash, describing the brief backward motion before forward progress resumes. Use the word when the reaction is both noticeable and forceful, whether it’s public outrage or a mechanical jolt.

Word Origin Backlash is literally 'back' + 'lash', and 'lash' comes from a root meaning 'to bind, tie' — the same root that gives us 'lace' and 'lasso'. Originally, a lash was a cord or thong, and the word backlash first described the sudden recoil of a whip. That's why we use it for a strong adverse reaction: you can almost see the whip snapping back. The binding root *leig- also appears in 'ligament' and 'oblige'.
