It appears as an adjective or adverb when you want to crown a champion among peers. Forming a superlative usually means tacking -est onto a short word (fast → fastest) or prefacing a longer one with most (beautiful → most beautiful). Some adjectives throw a curveball with irregular shapes—good becomes best, bad becomes worst. The term also doubles as a noun, referring to the word itself that carries this peak degree, as in “the superlative of ‘good’ is ‘best’.”
