proleptic

/pɹoʊˈlɛptɪk/ adj C1

anticipating

Word Origin Proleptic means anticipating something before it happens. It comes from Greek prolambanein 'to take before' (pro- 'before' + lambanein 'to take'). The root lambanein also gives us epilepsy (seizure, literally 'taking hold'), catalepsy (a seizure-like state), and even syllable (something taken together). Proleptic is a rhetorical term for anticipating an objection and answering it in advance — literally 'taking it beforehand.'
