monstrosity

/mɑnˈstɹɑsəti/ noun B1

**Monstrosity** describes anything so huge, clumsy or hideously odd that it seems born of a nightmare rather than nature. It can be a building that dwarfs its surroundings, a sculpture that rebels against aesthetic norms, or an idea that overwhelms reason. When you call something a monstrosity you highlight its lack of harmony with what is expected and its overwhelming presence. The term works equally well for concrete objects—like a skyscraper that looks like a steel cactus—and abstract concepts, such as a policy so convoluted it feels artificially monstrous. Use it when the subject’s grotesque excess is striking enough to provoke both awe and revulsion.

Word Origin Monstrosity comes from Latin monstrum, which originally meant a divine warning or omen — something that shows (monstrum from monere 'to warn'). A monster was a sign of something wrong, a warning from the gods. That's why demonstrate (to show clearly) and monitor (one who warns) share the same root. So a monstrosity is something so ugly or wrong it serves as a warning. The -ity turns it into a noun of state.
