undervaluation

/ˈəndɝˌvæɫjuˈeɪʃən/ noun

The act of undervaluing, of assigning too low a value to something.

Word Origin The 'value' part comes from Latin 'valere' meaning 'to be strong' — so something valuable is strong, worthy. Undervaluation is literally 'under-strength-ing,' assigning less worth than something's true strength. The same root gives us valor (courage, strength), valid (strong, sound), and ambivalent (having strength on both sides, mixed feelings). The under- prefix pushes the value down.
