distingue

/dɪsˈtæŋɡeɪ/ adj C1

having an aristocratic appearance

Word Origin Borrowed from French, but ultimately from Latin distinguere 'to mark off, separate.' Distingue means 'distinguished' — someone set apart by elegance. The same root gives us distinguish, distinct, and even extinguish (to put out, originally to stamp out). The PIE root *steig- meant 'to prick, mark,' so you can almost see the mark of distinction.
