extinguishable

/ɛkstˈɪŋɡwɪʃəbəl/ adj

Able to be extinguished.

Word Origin From Latin 'stinguere' 'to quench, stamp out', with 'ex-' (out). Extinguishable means able to be put out. The root 'stingu' also gives us 'extinct' (quenched), 'distinguish' (to separate by pricking out), 'distinct' (pricked apart), and 'instinct' (pricked in, impulse). The PIE root *steig- meant 'to prick, stick', so extinguishing is like stamping out a spark.
