/əˈfɹeɪd/ adj A1**Afraid** describes someone whose nerves have been set alight by fear or apprehension, a feeling that makes you flinch at shadows. It also slips into regretful tones, as when you’re sorry to face an unpleasant task. When you worry for another, you’re afraid for them. In archaic usage the word stretched to mean something unnecessary or extravagant, a superfluous flourish that adds no value. In everyday speech, it’s simply the state of being scared.
