inhabitation

/ɪnˌhæbəˈteɪʃən/ noun

The act of inhabiting, or the state of being inhabited; indwelling.

Word Origin From Latin in- 'in' and habere 'to have, hold' — so to inhabit is literally 'to hold oneself in' a place. The root habere is a great example of how 'holding' extends to dwelling: habit is something you hold onto regularly, habitat is where a species holds its ground, and exhibit is to hold something out for view. Inhabitation is the state of dwelling within.
