caress

/kɝˈɛs/ verb B1

**Caress** is a gentle, affectionate touch, usually a light stroke of the hand or an arm. Use it to describe a lover’s hand on a lover’s cheek, a parent’s palm on a child’s forehead, or a gentle tap on a pet’s fur. It also works figuratively: a song may caress your soul, a text may caress your mind.

Word Origin Caress comes from French caresse, from Italian carezza, from Latin carus 'dear, beloved.' So a caress is literally a 'dear-ing' — a touch that shows affection. The same Latin root gives us charity (dearness, love) and cherish (to hold dear). The PIE root *ka- means 'to like, desire.'
