mandamus

/mænˈdeɪməs/ noun C1

a court order

Word Origin Mandamus is straight from Latin, meaning 'we command' — it's the first word of a writ of mandamus, a court order commanding an official to do something. It comes from mandare 'to entrust, order', literally 'to give into someone's hand' (manus 'hand' + dare 'to give'). That same hand is in manual, manufacture, and manipulate, while dare gives us donate and data. So a mandamus is literally a command handed over.
