gobble

/ˈɡɑbəɫ/ noun A2, B2

**Gobble** means to stuff food into your mouth with the enthusiasm of a turkey at breakfast, to scarf a meal, and, on a more adult note, to perform a particular oral act. In golf it describes a putt hit so hard it would have rolled far beyond the cup if the hole hadn't caught it. The word also names the noisy, rapid clucking of turkeys and some other birds.

Word Origin Gobble is an onomatopoeic word—it imitates the sound of eating quickly or a turkey's call. The Old French gob- meant 'mouthful, lump', which reinforces the idea of swallowing hastily. That's why we have gobbler (a turkey) and gobbledygook (gobble + gook, nonsense that sounds like turkey talk).
