gewgaw

/ˈɡjuɡɑ/ noun C1

a cheap, showy ornament

Word Origin Gewgaw is a reduplicated word from Old French joujou 'plaything,' which comes from Latin jocus 'jest, joke, play.' So a gewgaw is a showy but worthless trinket, a plaything. The same root jocus gives us joke, jocular, jocose, and even joy and jewel (via Old French joie and jouel). The PIE root *yek- 'to speak' also gives us jest. So gewgaw is literally a 'joke-joke' thing.
