conventionalism

/kənˈvɛnʃənəɫɪzəm/ noun

Adherence to social conventions; conventional behavior.

Word Origin From Latin 'convenire' — 'to come together'. A convention is literally a 'coming together' of people or ideas. Conventionalism is the philosophy that things are just agreed-upon conventions, not natural truths. The root 'venire' is incredibly prolific: intervene (come between), invent (come upon, find), prevent (come before, stop), advent (a coming), event (a coming out), venue (a place where people come), revenue (money that comes back). So conventionalism is the -ism of what's come together by agreement.
