vacant

/ˈveɪkənt/ adj A2, B2

**Vacant** means empty, not occupied. It describes a space or position that has nothing in it. It can also describe a person’s eyes, when they look empty or unfocused. Use it to talk about an unfilled job, a vacant seat, or a vacant house. It can also describe a feeling of emptiness. When someone feels a vacant mind, their thoughts drift. In legal texts, a vacant title means ownership has been forfeited or erased. The word keeps its core idea of absence, but its tone shifts from literal to emotional when applied to people.

Word Origin Vacant comes from Latin vacare 'to be empty' — so a vacant lot is empty. The root vac- gives us vacuum (an empty space), vacate (to make empty), and even vacation (originally 'freedom from occupation, empty time'). The PIE root *eue- 'to leave, abandon' also gave void and avoid (to make empty, hence shun).
