heaving

/ˈhivɪŋ/ adj

Crowded with people.

Word Origin From Old English hebban 'to lift' — heaving is the act of lifting with effort. The PIE root *kap- 'to grasp' connects it to have and behave (literally 'to bear oneself'). Heavy comes from the same root: something that's hard to lift. Upheaval is a lifting up, often violently. So heaving is that straining, lifting motion.
