disputative

/dɪspjˈuɾətˌɪv/ adj

Tending to dispute.

Word Origin Disputative means inclined to dispute. Dispute comes from Latin disputare 'to reckon apart, discuss' — dis- 'apart' + putare 'to reckon, think'. Putare originally meant 'to prune' (think of cutting away to clarify), then 'to think, reckon'. So a dispute is a pruning of ideas, cutting them apart. The same root gives us compute (reckon together), impute (reckon in), repute (reckon again), and amputate (cut away). The PIE *pewH- meant 'to cut, strike'.
