correlate

/ˈkɔɹəˌɫeɪt/, /ˈkɔɹəɫət/ verb C1, C2

**Correlate** means to vary together in such a way that one can be guessed from the other. When two things correlate, changes in one line up with changes in the other, like the rising tide and the gulls’ complaints. In everyday speech you can say the two variables correlate even if the relationship is only loose; statisticians prefer to speak of a positive or negative correlation, measured by a number between –1 and 1. Remember, correlation pairs two things without implying cause, making it a handy way to note a partnership without assigning blame.

(formal)

Word Origin Correlate is built from cor- 'together' and relate, which comes from Latin referre 'to carry back.' So correlate literally means 'to carry back together' — to establish a mutual relationship. The root ferre 'to carry' is everywhere: refer, prefer, transfer, differ, offer, suffer, infer, confer, defer, and fertile (carrying much). The breakdown cor+relate shows the prefix and the base.
