phantasm

/ˌfænˈtæzəm/ noun B2, C1

an imaginary creature

Word Origin Phantasm comes from Greek phainein 'to show, shine,' from the PIE root *bha- 'to shine.' A phantasm is something that appears, an illusion or ghost. The same root gives us phantom, fantasy, phenomenon, epiphany, and diaphanous. So it's literally a 'showing' — something that shines forth, but may not be real.
