defeatism

/dɪˈfitɪzəm/ noun B2

**Defeatism** is the habit of expecting loss before the battle even begins. It’s the mental habit of assuming failure is inevitable. It often shows up in speech as why bother? and can undermine teamwork, because when a group adopts defeatist attitudes, motivation evaporates. Use it to describe a mindset, not a single act; you can call a politician’s pessimistic campaign slogan defeatist, or note a player’s slump as a streak of defeatism. It’s a noun; the adjective is defeatist.

【核心含义】失败主义是一种未战先认输的心理习惯,总认为失败不可避免。

常表现为"何必费力"的消极态度,多用于描述持续性的消极心态而非单次行为,如团队士气低迷或政治人物的悲观言论。注意与形容词defeatist(失败主义的)区分使用。

Word Origin From Latin dis- 'apart, reversal' and facere 'to do, make' — defeat literally means 'to undo, to unmake'. Defeatism is the attitude of expecting to be undone. The facere root is everywhere: fact, factory, effect, and even feat (a thing done). The negative sense of defeat developed from the idea of being 'unmade' in battle.
