sunburnt

/ˈsʌn.bɝnt/ adj A1

red and sore from too much sun

Word Origin Sun from Old English sunne, and burn from beornan 'to burn.' The -t is an old past participle ending, so sunburnt is literally 'burned by the sun.' The PIE root *gwher- meant 'to heat, burn,' giving us burn, brand, and furnace. Sun's root *sawel- also gives solar. A vivid compound: you can almost feel the sting.
