perseveration

/pɚˌsɛvəˈɹeɪʃən/ noun

An uncontrollable repetition of a particular response, such as a word, phrase, or gesture, despite the absence or cessation of a stimulus, usually caused by a brain injury or other organic disorder.

Word Origin Perseveration comes from Latin perseverare 'to persist,' from per- 'through' and severus 'strict, earnest.' The idea is sticking with something strictly, earnestly. The same root severus gives us severe and asseverate (to assert earnestly). Perseveration is the act of persisting, sometimes pathologically.
