Word Origin Manikin comes from Dutch manneken 'little man,' from man 'man' and the diminutive suffix -ken. It originally meant a dwarf or a little man, then a model of the human body. The same suffix appears in napkin (little cloth), pumpkin (little melon), and lambkin. The word mannequin is a French borrowing of the same Dutch word.
