loyalist

/ˈɫɔɪəɫɪst/ noun B1

**Loyalist** is a person whose allegiance clings firmly to a ruler, cause, or government. In the American Revolution the term described colonists who kept their loyalty to the British crown. The word works well when you want to highlight steadfast support, whether in historical debates, contemporary political parties, or even fervent fans of a sports team. It carries a slightly formal tone, hinting at a bond that isn’t easily shaken, and it can be used both as a noun (“the loyalists gathered”) and as an adjective (“a loyalist stance”).

Word Origin Loyalist comes from loyal, which goes back to Latin legalis 'legal,' from lex 'law.' So loyalty originally meant being faithful to the law, to one's legal obligations. The root lex gives us legal, legislate, and legitimate. The suffix -ist (from Greek -istes) indicates a person who adheres to something. A loyalist is thus someone who stands by the law or the established order.
