instill

/ˌɪnˈstɪɫ/ verb B2

to put something in gradually

Word Origin Instill comes from Latin in- 'into' and stillare 'to drop, trickle' — so literally, to drip something in. The idea is that you introduce an idea or quality gradually, like adding liquid drop by drop. The same stillare gives us distill (to drip down, separate by dripping) and distillation. So when you instill values, you're metaphorically dripping them in, one drop at a time.
