eventually

/iˈvɛnʃəɫi/, /iˈvɛntʃəwəɫi/, /ɪˈvɛnʃəɫi/, /ɪˈvɛntʃəwəɫi/ adv B1

**Eventually** means the moment when everything that kept you waiting finally decides to show up, whether after a marathon of setbacks or simply after enough time has passed. In mathematics it marks the point beyond which a rule holds for every term, ignoring a handful of early rebels. It also sneaks in as a polite way to say ‘maybe’ when certainty is still on holiday.

Word Origin Eventually comes from Latin evenire 'to come out, happen,' from ex- 'out' and venire 'to come.' So an event is something that 'comes out' — happens. Eventually means 'in the end, after all events.' The root venire also gives us adventure (what comes to you), convene (come together), prevent (come before), and revenue (come back). The breakdown e+vent+ual+ly shows the layers: out+come+al+ly.
