ruptured

/ˈɹəptʃɝd/ adj

Having a rupture; broken, leaking.

Word Origin From Latin 'rumpere' — to break. A rupture is a breaking, and ruptured means broken. The root 'rupt' gives us a whole family of breaking words: 'abrupt' (broken off), 'corrupt' (broken together, morally), 'disrupt' (break apart), 'erupt' (break out), 'interrupt' (break between), and 'bankrupt' (broken bank). The PIE root *reup- meant to break or tear.
