preselect

/pɹɪsᵻlˈɛkt/ verb

To select in advance.

Word Origin Preselect combines 'pre-' (before) and 'select' (to choose). 'Select' comes from Latin 'seligere', from se- 'apart' and 'legere' 'to choose, gather'. So preselect means to choose beforehand. The root 'legere' is incredibly productive: it gives us elect (choose out), collect (gather together), lecture (a reading), and legible (readable). The PIE root *leg- originally meant 'to collect', so selecting is gathering apart.
