nave

/ˈneɪv/ noun B2

**Nave** is the long central hall of a church where the congregation gathers. It runs from the main entrance straight toward the altar, forming the main public space of the building. In many cathedrals the nave is bordered by aisles and a row of columns that support a lofty ceiling, giving the interior a sense of spacious grandeur. The term also applies to the central compartment of a large ship, the open area that connects the forecastle and the cabin. Use **nave** whenever you want to describe that elongated, primary interior space, whether in stone or timber.

Word Origin Nave, the central part of a church, comes from Latin 'navis' 'ship' — because the vaulted ceiling looks like an upside-down ship's hull. The same root gives naval, navy, navigate, and astronaut (star sailor). So the nave is the 'ship' of the church.
