To perceive erroneously.

Word Origin A combination of 'mis-' (wrongly) and 'perceive', which comes from Latin 'per-' (through) + 'capere' (to take) — to perceive is to take in through the senses. So misperceive is to take in wrongly. The root 'capere' is incredibly productive: capture, concept, receive, deceive, accept, except, and even recipe (literally 'take!').
