divertimento

/dɪˌvɝtəˈmɛnˌtoʊ/ noun C1

a light instrumental composition, often in several movements

Word Origin Divertimento is a light, entertaining musical composition — literally a 'diversion' or 'turning aside' from serious matters. It comes from Italian, but ultimately from Latin divertere 'to turn away' (dis- 'apart' + vertere 'to turn'). The same root vertere gives us convert (turn together), invert (turn in), and universe (turned into one). The -imento suffix is Italian for 'the act of'. So a divertimento is a musical 'turning away' from the heavy stuff.
