diffraction

/dɪˈfɹækʃən/ noun B2

**Diffraction** is the way a wave bends around an edge or spreads out after slipping through a small opening. It turns a beam of light, sound, or any other wave into a fan of ripples that can interfere with each other. When the opening is comparable to the wave’s wavelength, the resulting pattern becomes strikingly vivid: bright and dark bands on a screen, the faint halo around a distant star, or the crisp edges of a rainbow created by water droplets. Engineers exploit diffraction to separate colors in spectrometers, while musicians appreciate how it colors the tone of a violin played in a cramped hallway.

Word Origin From Latin dis- 'apart' and frangere 'to break' — diffraction is literally 'breaking apart,' referring to the bending of waves around obstacles. The root fract- (break) gives us fraction (a broken piece), fracture (a break), and fragile (easily broken). The same root also produced refract (break back, bend light) and infraction (a breaking in). The dif- prefix is an assimilated form of dis-. So diffraction is the breaking of light or sound waves.
