causeless

/ˈkɔːzləs/ adj B1

without a reason

Word Origin Causeless is built from Latin causa 'reason' and the Old English suffix -less, from Proto-Germanic lausaz 'devoid of.' So it's literally 'devoid of a reason.' The -less suffix is everywhere: fearless, hopeless, restless. The root causa also gives us because (by cause), accuse, and excuse. The idea: something causeless happens for no reason at all.
