befuddle

/bɪˈfədəɫ/ verb B1

to confuse

Word Origin Befuddle comes from the prefix be- 'thoroughly, make' and fuddle, from Low German fuddeln 'to bungle, drink to excess.' So befuddle means to make someone confused, as if drunk. The same fuddle root gives us fuddle (to tipple) and befuddlement. The be- prefix is the same as in befriend, bewitch, and bedazzle — it intensifies the action.
