unlearned

/ʌnˈlɝnɪd/ adj B1

not gained from studying

Word Origin Unlearned comes from Old English 'leornian' 'to learn,' from PIE *leis- 'track, furrow' — so learning is literally following a track, gaining knowledge. The prefix un- can mean 'not' or 'reverse,' so unlearned can mean either 'not educated' or 'having deliberately forgotten.' The same root gives us 'lore' (traditional knowledge) and 'learn.' The -ed suffix marks it as a state.
