starched

/ˈstɑɹtʃt/ adj

Of a garment: having had starch applied.

Word Origin Starched means stiffened with starch, and 'starch' comes from Old English stearc 'stiff, hard, strong' — the same root that gave us 'stark'. So starched clothes are literally made stark. The PIE root *sterg- meant 'stiff, rigid', and it also gives us 'stark' and 'starch' (the substance). When you starch a shirt, you're making it rigid and strong.
