eponym

/ˈɛpənɪm/ noun C1

a person after whom something is named

Word Origin Eponym combines Greek epi- 'upon' and onoma 'name' — so it's a name that is 'put upon' something else, like a person after whom a place or thing is named. The onoma root is incredibly productive: synonym (same name), antonym (opposite name), anonymous (without a name), and pseudonym (false name). The epi- prefix also appears in epicenter (upon the center) and epidermis (upon the skin). So an eponym is literally a 'name upon' something.
