undervalue

/ˈəndɝˌvæɫju/ verb

To underestimate, or assign too low a value to (something or someone); to have too little regard for.

Word Origin Undervalue combines under with value, which comes from Latin valere 'to be strong, be worth.' So to undervalue is to assign less worth than something's true strength. The same root valere gives us valid (strong, well-grounded), valor (strength, courage), and equivalent (equal in value).
