unclassifiable

/ʌŋklˈæsɪfˌaɪəbəl/ adj

Incapable of being classified.

Word Origin From Latin classis 'class, division' and facere 'to make' — classify is literally 'to make into classes.' Unclassifiable means not able to be put into a class. The root classis originally meant 'fleet' (a division of ships), then any group. The same root gives us classic (of the highest class) and classroom. The -able suffix comes from habere 'to have, hold' — so classifiable is 'able to hold a class.'
