pertinacity

/pˌɜtɪnˈæsᵻɾi/ noun C1

stubbornness

Word Origin Built from Latin per- 'thoroughly' and tenere 'to hold' — so pertinacity is literally 'holding through' something, refusing to let go. The same tenere root gives us tenacious (holding tight), contain (hold together), and maintain (hold in hand). The idea: when you're pertinacious, you're holding on with a grip that won't quit.
