Its primary purpose is to keep people and objects from falling off and to shield the edge from wind. Parapets may be constructed from stone, brick, concrete, or metal, and they often double as decorative features that echo medieval battlements. On flat roofs they can support a coping or a small garden, while on bridges they provide a safety rail for pedestrians. In architecture the term also describes the portion of a wall that rises above the roofline, sometimes studded with crenellations for stylistic flair.
