overcorrection

/ˌoʊvɚkɚɹˈɛkʃən/ noun

The correction of something to an excessive degree, usually resulting in an error in the opposite direction.

Word Origin From Latin corrigere 'to make straight' and Old English ofer 'over' — literally 'correcting too much.' The root regere 'to guide, rule' gives us correct, direct, erect, and regulate. The PIE root *reg- 'to move in a straight line' also appears in right, rich, and royal. So overcorrection is a great example of how the idea of 'straightness' became a metaphor for correctness, and then we added 'over' to show excess.
