Word Origin Nonsuccess is the lack of success. Success comes from Latin successus 'a going under, an advance', from sub- 'under, near' + cedere 'to go'. The idea: success is something that 'goes up from under' — a favorable outcome. Non- simply negates it. The root cedere gives us a huge family: proceed (go forward), access (go to), exceed (go out), recede (go back), concede (go together), and many more. The PIE *ked- meant 'to go, yield'.
